On Sunday afternoon 16th September 2007, at the "Pantachou" Beach next to the Ayia Napa Harbour, over 250 dancers from around the area took part in the record breaking attempt.

Under the watchful eyes of locals, tourists and officials, a total of 268 dancers from 8 dancing groups stretched out in the sand for about 500 meters dancing Syrtaki to the world famous "Zorbas" tune which marks Cypriot & Greek Culture.

Apart from the World Record Attempt, the Mayor of Ayia Napa - Mr Antonis Tsokkos - said that the event was also to promote the natural beauty of the area and to point out that the town is not just about the nightlife.

According to some reports, Australia claim that they set the record in 2004 but according to the Guiness World Records, no such record is ratified and that it could be in another catogery. Also, they had awaited evidence from Cyprus that such a record has been set on Sunday in order for it to be officialy recognised as a World Record which was sent and the record was then recognized.

It must be mentioned that for the record to be allowed, the dancers must dance in synchronised steps (the dancers must be dancing the same steps at the same time).

This event was just one of the latest in a series of recent World Record attempts all over the island, from the largest New Years Cake through to the largest Syrtaki Dance which took place here, in the Ayia Napa municipality.
