Mr Dimitris Christofias of the AKEL group - Anorthotikon Komma Ergazemenou Laou (translated as the Progressive Party of the Working People) won the Cypriot Presidential election by only 6.74% (30,409 votes) to become the new President. Despite being backed by the outgoing Presidents political party and the other main ones, he only just managed to stage off his challenger Mr. Ioannis Kassoulidis.

His political party is seen as a Communist party but not as extreme as others. This considering, it is surprising for outsiders to see political parties like EDEK (a socialist party) throwing their support behind them but then again, this is Cyprus, a small island where anything can happen. As 1 paper had joked earlier, Cyprus follows Cuba and China towards a communist way of life.

In spite of winning 4 of the 5 areas in Cyprus, only falling in the Famagusta area, the margin of victory was very small. In the 9 electral areas of Famagusta he won 4 of them, which including Ayia Napa where the new President gained 1,135 votes to 885 votes of his opponent (the others being Deryneia, Frenaros and Axeritou.)

Here at Visit Ayia Napa, we wish Mr Christofias all the best and hopes that his term in office brings an end to the separation of the island and also helps the tourist industry regain its former strength.
